The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - Superstition In the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, there is a lot of superstition. Some examples of superstition in the novel are Huck killing a spider which is bad luck, the hair-ball used to tell fortunes, and the rattle-snake skin Huck touches that brings Huck and Jim good and bad luck. Superstition plays an important role in the novel Huck Finn. In Chapter one Huck sees a spider crawling up his shoulder, so he flipped it off and it went into the flame of the candle. Before he could get it out, it was already shriveled up. Huck didn't need anyone to tell him that it was an bad sign and would give him bad luck. Huck got scared and shook his clothes off, and turned in his tracks three times. He then tied a lock of his hair with a thread to keep the witches away. "You do that when you've lost a horseshoe that you've found, instead of nailing it up over the door, but I hadn't ever heard anybody say it was any way to keep of bad luck when you'd killed a spider."(Twain 5). In chapter four Huck sees Pap's footprints in the snow. So Huck goes to Jim to ask him why Pap is here. Jim gets a hair-ball that is the size of a fist that he took from an ox's stomach. Jim asks the hair-ball; Why is Pap here? But the hair-ball won't answer. Jim says it needs money, so Huck gives Jim a counterfeit quarter. Jim puts the quarter under the hair-bal l. The hair-ball talks to Jim and Jim tells Huck that it says. "Yo'ole father doan' know yit what he's a-gwyne to do. Sometimes he spec he'll go 'way, en den ag'in he spec he'll stay. De bes' way is tores' easy en let de ole man take his own way. Dey's two angles hoverin' roun' 'bout him. One uv'em is white en shiny, en t'other one is black. De white one gits him to go right a little while, den de black one sil in en gust it all up. A body can't tell yit which one gwyne to fetch him at de las'. But you is all right. You gwyne to have considable trouble in yo' life, en considable joy. Sometimes you gwyne to git hurt, en sometimes you gwyne to git sick; but every time you's gwyne to git well ag'in. Dey's two gals flyin' 'bout yo' in yo' life. One uv 'em's light en t'other one is dark. One is rich en t'other is po'. You's gwyne to marry de po' one fust en de rich one by en by. You wants to keep 'way fum de water as much as you kin, en don't run no resk, 'kase it's down in de bills dat you's gwyne to git hung." (Twain 19). Huck goes home and goes up to his room that night and Pap is there. In Chapter ten, Huck and Jim run into good luck and bad luck. The good luck was Huck and Jim finds eight dollars in the pocket of an overcoat. After dinner on Friday, they are lying in the grass, then Huck ran out of tobacco, so he went to the craven to get some, and finds a rattlesnake. Huck kills it and curled it up and put it on the foot of Jim's blanket. Night came and Jim flung himself on the blanket and the snake's mate was there, and it bit Jim on the heel. Jim tells Huck to chop off the snake's head, then skin the body of the snake and roast a peice of it. He took the rattles off and tied them to Jim wrist. Jim said it would help him. Huck says "I made up my mind I wouldn't ever take a-holt of a snake-skin again with my hands, now that I see what had come of it." (Twain 52). This goes to support the nature nurture discussion and proves that they both play a leading role in attitudinal development among children. To begin we see that, as stated previously s this study was done to test heritability and environmental effects of attitudes by testing 195 sets of monozygotic twins and 141 sets of same sex dizygotic twins. It was conducted to try and answer the question whether attitudes in individuals are inherited genetically, or are environmental effects the cause of peoples opinions and attitudes on various subjects and topics. Prior to the test the scientists hypothesis was that attitudes are learned and caused by the environment and that attitudes develop through experience and are therefore determined by environmental factors (life experiences) Some of the major major themes played in the study included the nature/nurture debate, does environment affect attitudes, socio-cultural influence on children, and how does socio-cultural context affect development and individual differences in development. This study is of interest to me because being a twin, I like to see how twins are used to confirm of disprove tests and studies. I was also interested in the study as finding the cause of attitudes and various behaviors was of interest to me. The Merchant of Venice Essay The Merchant of Venice tittle has been carefully chosen and it is apt and suggested. There has been some controversy among the critics that the tittle belong to Shylock or Antonio. This controversy arose because in the first entry the play had been named The Merchant of Venice or The Jew of Venice. Later on the double tittle disappeared and it was named The Merchant of Venice. So critics supposed that it is Shylock who is real merchant of Venice and the play is slightly named after him. They pointed out that Antonio is passive and has a colorless personality in the play and remains in the background with very little appearance on the stage, whereas Shylock has a dominant role in the play. Therefore it is said that Shakespeare must have had the Jew in his mind and not Antonio while naming the play. However a superficial reading of the play makes it clear that Antonio is the real merchant of Venice. His name is referred repeatedly as the royal merchant and good Antonio and also in the main trail scene Portia asked pointedly which is the merchant which is the Jew. From the beginning of the play Antonio is presented as a rich merchant and a world trader who sent argosies to various countries. On the other hand Shylock is never referred to as a merchant but sketched as an usurer and a cruel money lender. Though Antonio is a passive figure we can say that the play is rightly named after him. It was Antonios action that gave rise to the plot of the drama and indirectly he is related to the casket story, the second main plot of the drama. The bond story rises directly out of his execution of the bond. The casket story is indirectly but vitally related to him as he is the person who enters into the bond, borrows money from Shylock and helps Bassanio to reach Belmont as a suitor. In the final scene the battle is fought over his fate and every incident of the play converges this scene. Hence the play can be aptly be called The Merchant of Venice after him.

Andy Warhol Works Cited Missing "I just paint things I always thought were beautiful, things you use every day and never think about†¦ I just do it because I like it. (Beckris 110) I just do it because I like it is Andy’s philosophy on life. Andy might just be the most interesting and at the same time the most confusing individual you will ever read about. Andy’s work is like none others. His art brought common day people together and showed the impact of contemporary society and the idea of mass media on values. Andy’s father Ondrej Wharhola is best described as a bald, burly man with a bulging belly and massive upper arms, pudgy nose and bristling sideburns. Ondrej was born in 1889 in Minkova. (Bekris, 6) He was married and living with Julia Warhola, mother of Andy, for three years in Mikova. In order to avoid being drafted into the Balkan conflict in 1912 he immigrated to Pittsburgh without her at the age of seventeen to work in a coal field in the industrial district of Philadelphia. ( Bekris, 7) Julia Warhola was born in a small village in the Capathian mountains outside of Czechoslovakia. Julia was the oldest and prettiest of her fifteen other siblings. She was also said to be the artistic one of the bunch. (Bekris, 7) In 1914 Julia gave birth to a baby girl. Because of the conditions due to the war the infant contracted influenza six months later and died. Julia’s mother was so depressed about the news of the infants death that she died one month later. (Bekris, 8-9) Julia was now reliable for her only two surviving sisters of ages six and nine. For the next four years Julia fled from the soldiers, hiding in woods and barns. She was supposed to be receiving money from Ondrej but because she was always on the run she never saw the money. From 1918-1921 she raised 160 dollars to go to the united states to find Ondrej. (Bekris, 9) Andy Warhol was born on September 28, 1930 in Forest City, Pennsylvania. Or so we think. This is what the original birth certificate read but Andy wanted people to believe he was born in Mc Keesport, or even Hawaii. He also stays true to believe the certificate is a forgery. Most books and other reportable sources confirm that he was indeed born in 1930 but the dates do range from 1925-1931 (Bekris, 10). Andy was raised in a coal mining town in Philadelphia. It was a dark musty town were the sky stayed black. The to... ... 10pm and at 4am on Sunday February 22, Min Chou, the private nurse who had been selected by the hospital from a registry, took Andy’s blood pressure and found it stable. She gave a progress report to the chief surgical resident by telephone at 11pm; presumably while the patient slept. At 5:45am Ms. Chou noticed that Warhol had turned blue and his pulse had weakened. Unable to waken him she summoned the floor nurse who in the words of a colleague, "almost had a stroke" A cardiac arrest team began resuscitation efforts but according to hospital sources, had difficulty putting a tube in Warhol’s windpipe because rigor mortis had started to set in. At 6:31am the artist was pronounced dead. The art world suffered a great lose with the death of Andy Warhol. His personal style will always move forward touching and changing people’s lives every day. Andy was a one of a kind and will never be recreated. To understand his art is a feeling many people over look. It is an every day reminder that we don’t take the time to look at what goes on around us. Now when I walk I wont just look down but all around me. At the trees, clouds, bricks under my feet, and the entire world moving around me.

This can be attributed perhaps to different norms and concepts on crime of different societies, as well as the overall way of life of the people in any given area. If this were analyzed further, it will be noted that culture plays a role in the way that crime is viewed in a given society. This essay deals with the concept of culture, especially in the way that it relates to crime. Culture, Society and Criminality Before juxtaposing crime and culture, however, it would be necessary to define the overly used and abused concept of culture. Generally, culture is the overall pattern of the way of life of a given community of people together with the structures of symbols and meanings that they attach to various aspects of their society. This also includes the morality of the society as well as the collection of acceptable and non-acceptable behaviors (Krober & Kluckhohn, 1952). Since the moral system is included here, it impinges upon the conception of what is right, as well as the way that people in a given society view law, together with the commission of crimes. Given that culture affects the overall lifestyle of peoples in a society, it is inevitable that crimes are also affected by culture. For example, in a study conducted by Karstedt (2001), she mentioned that culture has been recognized by criminology as one of the factors influencing crime. The study took note of various social control means in Asian countries with low crime rate such as Japan. Karstedt called for the introduction of methods and ways through which cultures may be effectively compared to study the differences in culture and its impact on crime. By conducting an extensive survey in one of the Southern States in the US, Warner (2003) found out that cultural disorganization affect crimes. Her findings show that a prevailing culture conditioned by disadvantage in the society and the disconnection of social ties have significant impact on the level of social relationships and ties of the community. This in turn impacts informal modes of social control in the society. Without these informal social control, it would the tendency for crimes to be committed becomes stronger. On the other hand, Leonardsen (2002) investigated the apparent anomaly of Japan—an urban country with very low crime rate. In his study, Leonardsen pointed out to apparent loss of too much individualism in Japan while focusing on the overall community. He argued that although the loss of individuality can be seen in Japan, it has much to teach to Western countries, especially regarding identity, obligations and social connections. Conclusion Based on the studies mentioned above, it can be seen that indeed culture has a significant impact on crime. Crime cannot only be prevented through formal means such as law, police force, and the prison system. Rather, there are informal institutions and norms that help prevent or perhaps encourage the occurrence of crime. When social ties are severed and a â€Å"negative† culture of the disadvantaged spawns, social controls are weakened, thus increasing the likelihood of the occurrence of crime. A focus on the community’s norms, however, can result to a more orderly society with low incidence of crime. These studies are congruent with Black’s theory that if the culture and the means of informal social control in a society are weak, then the tendency for that society is to have laws that are more powerful as compared with other societies with stronger social control means (Black, 1976). Feminism in A Doll House In Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll House Nora Helmer is a prime example of a woman’s role in the 19th century, that being that she was more for show than anything else. Nora’s husband, Torvald, treats his wife like a living doll and uses pet names for her rather than her actual name further establishing her position as nothing more than a toy. For Torvald. Nora’s purpose in her own home is to be subservient in a mental capacity as her husband often regards her more as a child than an adult by punishing her for simple, silly matters such as eating sweets. This treatment, however, is not new for Nora as it is revealed that her father treated her quite similarly. When the play opens Nora has just returned from Christmas shopping and we are given a description of her home, â€Å"A comfortable room, tastefully but not expensive furnished. † (Doll act I). Further explanation reveals details which tell the audience that the financial situation for Nora and Torvald is good. As with most things the Helmer home is nothing more than a facade for Nora. One author says, â€Å" [T]he house is a mere container, or doll’s house, for Nora, who spends her time entertaining or nervously accommodating (as her nickname â€Å"the squirrel† implies) her demanding husband — rather than decorating, designing, or even â€Å"taking charge of† her own life† (Connie Pedoto). It’s from this that the reader first gets the idea that appearance means a lot to the Helmer family. Early on it is made very evident through the conversation with husband that she is meant to be the face of their marriage. Ibsen introduces the fact that Nora is not allowed sweets; something that seems strange in this day and age, but in the 19th century was not uncommon. It shows the power a husband had over his wife in that time as well as the submissive behavior women adopted in order to have a proper marriage. Ibsen also reveals that Nora and Torvald’s children have been raised by a nanny their whole lives further establishing Nora’s role as a trophy. Because Nora has been absent in the role of raising her children it is safe to say that she did not have the ability to be a proper mother, ot because she did not love her children, but because she never had the chance to be a proper mother. When she is showing Torvald all of the wonderful toys she has purchased for their children it is obvious that her excitement stems from the fact that it is the only thing she can do in order to show her love to them. This can be compared to Nora’s belief that money fixes everything and this is shown when the author writes â€Å"Yes, yes, it will. But come here and let me show you what I have bought. And all so cheap! Look, here is a new suit for Ivar, and a sword; and a horse and a trumpet for Bob; and a doll and dolly’s bedstead for Emmy,–they are very plain, but anyway she will soon break them in pieces. And here are dress-lengths and handkerchiefs for the maids; old Anne ought really to have something better† (Doll act I). Though the Helmer’s have not always had money to spend in such a manner it is obvious that Nora has taken this newfound fortune as a way to express her love and gratitude to those around her through gifts rather than words or physical affection. When Mrs. Linde is introduced the readers are given a different view of women in this society. Nora must hide every crime she has committed, whether that be the forgery of her father’s signature or sneaking a macaroon, because she is married, while Mrs. Linde no longer has a husband to answer to. Mrs. Linde is treated quite differently than Nora as she is widowed and because of that the expectations that are placed on married women no longer apply to her. She is given the opportunity to work at a bank in the position that was once held by Krogstad. This is surprising as during this time it was the peak of women’s suffrage and women were not usually allowed to hold positions that a man did let alone replace one. When Nora sees the freedom that her childhood friend has acquired upon losing her husband the resolve she had in keeping her secret about the forgery begins to wane though the audience does not see this until much later. Torvald’s treatment of Nora may seem harsh in comparison to the relationship between husband and wife these days, but at the time it was very common. This is why Nora plays along and enjoys the little games her husband plays with her. At the end of the play Nora’s misdeeds come to light and she is forced to admit what she has done. Trovald reacts as expected and verbally abuses her before deciding that the matter should be forgotten, all is forgiven and they will go back to their normal lives. It is at this point that Nora realizes that the life and marriage she has been fighting so hard to protect by keeping her secret from coming to light is beyond saving. Though she this is not the first time she has defied her husband this is the first time she has done so without trying to conceal the act. When she decides to leave it is obvious that it is a shock to Torvald, whom has always believed his wife to be obedient, especially when he gives her the chance to forget all about it. It is also shocking for the audience as up to this point Nora has made it quite clear that she believes she would die without the financial support of her husband. Nora was a typical wife in the 19th century. Nothing she did was uncommon and the fact that she came to see the truth about her marriage speaks volumes about the times and political issues surrounding women in those times. Joan Tempelton, author of Ibsen’s Women, says â€Å"Nora’s doll house and exit from it have long been principal international symbols for women’s issues† (111). At the beginning of the play the audience would never expect Nora to make such a bold choice as to leave her husband and children, but as other characters are introduced their help or, in Krogstad’s case, blackmail leads her to the decision that she and her family would be better off without her as she has realized her true role in her marriage which is that she doesn’t have one. She is nothing more than a living doll in her own home and it took her husband discovering the truth, that his wife is no as obedient as he believes, to bring her to this conclusion. Mrs. Linde is the opposite of Nora. She shows the freedom s of a woman not married. Though times are hard for her as she was left with no money it is obvious that she prefers it that way. For Mrs. Linde marriage was financial security, but now that that has been taken from her she takes it upon herself to find a job and uses the friendship she has with Nora, whom is still married and subservient to her husband, in the hopes that she will be able to coax Torvald into getting Mrs. Linde a job. Nora does this as a favor to a friend, but when Krogstad threatens to reveal the truth about the forgery Nora is quick to beg Torvald not to give Mrs. Linde the position that formerly belonged to Krogstad. She does his because, as a woman, she knows men to be the more dominant sex and fully expects him to go through with it. It is surprising to see Torvald deny Nora’s request, not because she is his wife, but because Mrs. Linde is a woman and it was no very common in the 19th century to be chosen for a job over a man. Feminism is a large part of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll House and perfectly portrays the role of women in the 19th century. Through Nora’s journey of self-discovery she realizes that her father had treated her like a delicate china doll just as her husband does now that she is a full grown adult and at the conclusion of the play she takes it upon herself to break from that cycle and become her own person. Like Mrs. Linde Nora takes this opportunity to become her own person and frees herself from her controlling marriage.

William Wordsworth (1770 – 1850) was a Romantic poet and a major influence in bringing about the 18th centuries’ Romantic Age of Literature. An original poet for many different artistic qualities, his personality and emotional intelligence had made him the perfect forefather for a literary movement that would resound philosophically and poetically to this day. Romanticism, defined by it predisposition towards nature and its deep emotional connection with the feelings of the poet, is what makes William Wordsworth’s â€Å"I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud† such a perfect example of Romantic poetry. One of the features of the poem is language simplicity that was realized both in structure and word-choice. If analyzing the line it is as a rule end-stopped. The meter is Iambic hexameter, i. e. it is a rising one. Within the poem the meter is constant with rare modifications that attract the reader’s attention on the meaning of those lines. Such meter scheme is a sign of a cheerful, light and optimistic tone. The rhyme is masculine exact with cross rhymes in the first 4 lines followed with the couplet. This form of the structure is first – describing, second – emotional, and third – dynamic. The first-person speaker is a grown-up man who is philosophically-minded. The general tone of the lyrics is a little pessimistic in the beginning though the narrator admires the environment and satisfied in the ending. In the first stanza William Wordsworth describes his state of mind during a walk. The author makes use of epithets here like â€Å"golden† – showing the connection between daffodils with luxury of the sun, the richness of the sky, its freedom; then there are metaphors that depict easy, light and bright glittering life as â€Å"cloud that floats†, â€Å"fluttering and dancing†. The only meter modification here is the last line â€Å"Fluttering and dancing in the breeze† that attracts the reader’s attention to the character of an action – it is cheerful, carefree and dreamy. Some would say that the first stanza is rather depressive as the author uses such words as â€Å"lonely†, personification in â€Å"a crowd, /A host, of golden daffodils† – they sound hopeless and pressing. Nevertheless, the last two lines make the general emotion of the stanza. It is a daydream; the narrator’s thoughts are far away, unconcerned with the immediate circumstances in which he finds himself. Wordsworth, ever the Romanticist, perhaps uses these two introductory lines to describe the disconnected and dispassionate ways that e all live our lives; walking through life in a haze of daily ritual and monotonous distractions in a pointless and spiritually disinterested state where we fail as emotional creatures to appreciate the quiet beauties of life that we as human beings need for spiritual sustenance. William Wordsworth’s â€Å"lonely cloud† is our own private impersonal perception of the world, floating miles above it and missing the quiet virtues of nature, beauty, and other sources of emotional nourishment. The second stanza opens with the description of the clouds with the help of different stylistic devices: simile – â€Å"as the stars†, hyperbole – â€Å"never-ending†, â€Å"ten thousand at a glance†, metaphor – â€Å"their heads†, and epithet – â€Å"sprightly†. These help the reader to visualize, to imagine and to feel the atmosphere and the mood of the walk with daffodils. So, the speaker here is depicted as having a moment of quiet introspection. The tone of the second stanza then is relaxing – the choice of words creates an image of a resort or a holiday: stars, shine, twinkle, margin of a bay, dance. The second modification in meter is observed here in the last line: â€Å"Tossing their heads in sprightly dance† where this sprightly dance, to my mind, can be compared with red old wine of the highest quality. The third stanza contains the main idea of the text: â€Å"A poet could not be but gay,/ In such a jocund company†. The author means to say that the light and joyful society cannot but bring pleasure and wish to write for them, to tell about their happiness. Such epithets as â€Å"sparkling† and â€Å"jocund† depict the privileged class. They have everything they need and now they can dance for everybody to gaze at them. The ending stanza brings the speaker back to his couch. Although the mood remains to be shiny, or â€Å"vacant, pensive† the narrator feels still in the dream dancing with the daffodils. This stanza has no modifications like the previous one which signifies achieving harmony, joy and calmness in the heart of the speaker. For this the author also makes use of such stylistic devices as oxymoron â€Å"the bliss of solitude† that points out some positive moments of being alone, inversion â€Å"And then my heart with pleasure fills† shows the process and the character of this process of â€Å"filling the heart†. The main idea of the poem is that people are never alone – they are accompanied by nature beauty. The things around can make your heart beat, can touch a soul by the scene of a thousand-fold host of yellow daffodils swaying in the breeze against the backdrop of waters breaking against the rocks of the bay. In William Wordsworth’s â€Å"I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud†, the daffodils become much more than mere flowers. They are a symbol of natural beauty and, more importantly, symbolize living a life as rich in experience and sensation as would make a life worth living. They represent, in their light-hearted dance, the joy and happiness of living an adoring and fulfilling life, embracing it for every drop of nectar it could so bring.

This also includes ensuring safety measures for those police officers involved directly in the high speed pursuit.
